Over the past months, the Youbiquo team has been working intensively, together with the entire MotivateXR consortium, on the preparation of deliverable D7.1 – Pilot preparation and training activities. This document represents a key milestone in the project: it collects the analysis of use cases, the adopted methodologies, and the planning of training and experimentation activities to be carried out within the pilots. More than just a report, it serves as a practical guide that connects technological, organizational, and training aspects, with the goal of making XR solutions applicable in real contexts and measurable in their impact. The development of D7.1 required the joint contribution of technology providers, academic institutions, and industrial partners, who actively collaborated to merge different skills and perspectives. The result is an advanced document that defines the pathway towards the beta testing phase and the subsequent final validation. For Youbiquo, participating in this activity has been a valuable opportunity to leverage our expertise in wearable technologies and augmented reality, and to contribute to the design of innovative training tools tailored to the needs of complex sectors such as industry and energy. With the completion of D7.1, the MotivateXR project now enters a crucial phase: the coming months will focus on field testing, data collection, and continuous refinement of the solutions. Stay tuned – we will soon share further results and updates from this exciting journey.

Youbiquo as a strategic stakeholder took part in the PCTO workshop organized by DISA-MIS and which ended in the past few days. The DISA-MIS Pathways for Transversal Skills and Orientation are designed in accordance with the “ScopriTalento” model aimed at developing the culture of economics and management through the introduction of active, orientation and multimedia teaching in the Italian School and University. In order to encourage the discovery of individual vocations, as well as the identification and development of the most strategic skills for the current working context, the model provides that the University works in close collaboration with both upper secondary schools and with strategic stakeholders operating in the area. These are workshops aimed at stimulating the development of corporate culture already in the third year students of higher education institutions, then progressively continuing with those of the fourth and fifth year. As part of the path, Youbiquo as a business partner is committed to promoting two challenges related to the development of a new technological solution for the retail sector. The challenges launched were useful in stimulating the creativity of the third and fifth year students, who, led by university tutors, presented a strategic plan for defining a customer experience and a user interaction built on the identified targets. Considering the company’s internationalization plans and the launch of the product in foreign markets, the analysis took into account cultural differences and provided interesting insights for the in-depth study of evolving issues. The collaboration between the world of universities and that of businesses is of strategic importance for the innovation and development of the country. The exchange of knowledge between universities and companies and the implementation of common projects are fundamental for the attractiveness of universities, the competitiveness of companies, the employability of students, and the economic and social growth of the territories. Youbiquo has been collaborating for years with research centers and universities and has recently signed new agreements with university centers aimed at collaboration in the field of financing projects but also at the insoursing of skills and the enhancement of know-how. The educational partnership is a strategic investment for universities and businesses because it activates a circularity of knowledge that is good for all the players involved.

3D printing has revolutionized the world of prototyping, making it possible to produce physical models of a project in just a few hours. This given rise the concept of additive manufacturing. Today we speak of “additive manufacturing” or additive manufacturing to describe a manufacturing method that directly from files, or rather, from a CAD model, produces objects by adding material one layer at a time: unlike the traditional subtractive process, in which a block of raw material is gradually removed the excess material until the required result is obtained, with Additive Manufacturing the material is added and each subsequent layer joins the previous one until the object is completed. Prototype: what it is and what it is used for The prototype is the physical representation of an idea or project. It is the first physical output created to evaluate both aesthetic and functional aspects of an application. Rapid prototyping in the industrial sector: what it is and what it is used for Rapid prototyping uses additive or subtractive manufacturing for rapid and economical reviews of projects aimed at industrialization. Today, the current industrial additive manufacturing systems allow real production batches to be created. Benefits of prototyping Thanks to industrial additive manufacturing technologies we are able to create rapid prototypes and models useful for: Evaluate aspects of an aesthetic nature Optimize geometries Improve production cycles Evaluate functional aspects Improve the technical characteristics of the products Evaluate and optimize production times and costs Prototyping consultancy Competence and know-how are the core of the work of designers and designers and remain essential for the perfect success of a project created in 3D printing together with the contribution of specialized production personnel. However, all this is not sufficient to transform an idea into a product. It is necessary to carry out a feasibility study that highlights the criticalities and the technological limits so as to adapt the functional solution to the ideal concept. Youbiquo has a RnD team capable of transforming ideas that involve the mixture of industrial design, hardware, firmware and software into solutions ready for the market. For more information, consult the Youbiquo Concept Lab created to support Start-ups and SMEs to launch technological solutions. Youbiquo can also assist you in the application of your innovative idea in funded projects promoted both at national and European level.

On February 3 and 4, 2021, the OPTIMAI project ‘Optimizing Manufacturing Processes through Artificial Intelligence and Virtualization’ held its online kick-off meeting. This new Research & Innovation Action, funded by the European Commission’s programme HORIZON 2020, is coordinated by CERTH – Centre for research and technology Hellas, one of the largest research centres in Greece. The meeting brought together 15 partners from 8 European countries. The project consortium is formed by a well-balanced group of research organizations, industrial players, SMEs and end-users active in the project. Kleemann Hella S.A. (Greece), Televes S.A.U. (Spain) and Microsemi Semiconductor Ltd (UK) will be directly and actively involved in in the user evaluation and validation activities in order to maximize the solution developed by OPTIMA in terms of impact and commercial uptake. Industry is crucial for the European economy. Enabling technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and digital twins (DT) are key drivers for the next generation of industry. Using these technologies, the EU-funded OPTIMAI project will strive to strike an optimal balance between fast, cheap and reliable production choices that have a big impact on the competitiveness of an industry. Thus, the project will develop smart instrumentation of production for quality inspection and monitoring. Using AI models, collected data will be analysed for the early detection of defects, the identification of upstream deficiencies and the reconfiguration of production parameters. To optimise production planning, the project will virtualise production using digital twins of processes and sensors. Youbiquo will mainly work on computer vision techniques for operator-machine interaction and on Augmented Reality interface and visual analytics. The Italian certified innovative SME will design and develop different interactions modules aiming to exploit all the features of the Smart Glass, both electronics and software. For these purposes, Youbiquo will work on the hand gestures recognition using 3D Camera ToF together with other RGB cameras and AI algorithms; moreover, the company will design and develop a Natural Language Understanding module to interact with the AR world. Youbiquo will manage an efficient AR maintenance use case in which video stream is remotely evaluated and AR information are shown on the Smart Glass optics. Defects or malfunctions of the instrument in front of the operator will be represented in AR, in real-time, in order to improve the maintenance operations.

On September 21 and 22, 2020, the DARLENE project ‘Deep AR Law Enforcement Ecosystem’ held its online kick-off meeting. This new Research & Innovation Action, funded by the European Commission’s programme HORIZON 2020, is coordinated by CERTH, Centre for Research & Technology Hellas, one of the leading research centres in Greece with important scientific and technological achievements. The meeting brought together 15 partners from 10 European countries. The project consortium is formed by a well-balanced group of research organizations, industrial players, SMEs and end-users active in the project and who will be actively involved in the user evaluation and validation activities. At the core of its concept, DARLENE is envisioned as an Augmented Reality (AR) system for Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs), consisting of a variety of technological components, which aim to enhance human physical and mental processing capacity to increase Situational Awareness (SA) and aid in tough decision-making under various loads of stress. DARLENE will offer European LEAs a proactive security solution, which will provide detection and recognition, combining cutting edge technology and public security in all security verticals. The project will, therefore, develop practical and beneficial policing applications through the use of affordable, lightweight and inconspicuous AR glasses. Such applications will capitalize on cutting edge research that will combine with AR Technology to create innovative methods for combating crime and even terrorist acts. To align technology development with actual security needs and requirements, DARLENE will build a community of LEAs organization and security stakeholders that will guide the development process and evaluate the entire DARLENE ecosystem. In this regard, DARLENE foresees extensive demonstration and training activities for LEAs while the entire solution will be demonstrated and validated in realistic scenarios during the pilot phase of the project, thus paving the way to its field deployment and commercial uptake. The project will last 3 years and will conclude in August 2023. The fundamental components of DARLENE consist of: a wearable micro-computer Module and a head-mounted display (HMD) unit embedded with tracking and sensing hardware, capable of running virtual 3D rendering applications in real time. This basic system will further be enriched with wireless and mobile hotspot transceivers, which will enable the CPU module compartment to act as a 5G access point. Youbiquo’s role in the project is to: Augmented Reality platform integration and technical assessment; DARLENE Wearable & Patrol Car Edge Computing Nodes; Testing and technical validation; Market analysis and sustainable business models; Lead the Exploitation post program. The project’s factsheet is available at CORDIS: https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/883297/it This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation programme under Grant Agreement No 883297.
