To participate in the NEOLAiA Metaverse challenge, a PC with 16GB of RAM and an Nvidia RTX 3060 or higher graphics card is required (to be confirmed if there are specific requirements for Leonardo headsets in PCVR mode). We recommend installing the Unity game engine version 2022.3.37f1.
For projects in the "NEOLAiA Metaverse" challenge, an open-source license for non-commercial use is mandatory. Participants in the challenge retain the intellectual property of the project.
The official project repository of the NEOLAiA Metaverse is on GitHub at: https://github.com/UNIC-Metaverse/NeoVerse
One person from each team participating in the challenge can fork it and publish it on their own GitHub account with their own modification.
Type of admitted app and objective
The NEOLAiA Metaverse is a virtual meeting space designed to connect students, teachers, and visitors from different European universities. Its goal is to eliminate physical distances and promote educational and orientation activities in an accessible and innovative way. Leveraging Virtual Reality, NEOLAiA facilitates collaboration and interaction between users in different locations, allowing it to host events such as courses, seminars, workshops, or individual student-teacher meetings.
With this Hackathon, we aim to enrich and enhance the features of our virtual world. We challenge participants to put themselves to the test by:
- Creating new environments within the metaverse.
- Developing new interaction modes between users.
- Designing and implementing new features.
Youbiquo Category:
A Team must consist of two to five (2–5) participants ("Participants") from a University, private companies, or as freelancers. Participants in a Team may come from the same University and beyond. Multiple Teams from the same university may participate, but University Participants may not be part of more than one team.
By participating in the Competition, Participants declare and warrant that they have read and accepted all Competition Rules set out in this document and that they have received prior approval from the University they attend to participate in the Competition.

The following are prohibited: illegal, defamatory, discriminatory, offensive content, content that violates third-party rights, or content that may cause harm to persons or property and/or that violates sensitive data.
Participants must comply with UNISA University rules regarding spaces (access, hours, conduct, prohibitions).
Youbiquo and UNISA University may at any time disqualify or interrupt the activity of a team in case of violations or risks.
The team guarantees that the project is original or uses exclusively third-party materials with licenses compatible with store distribution; a complete declaration of libraries/assets/datasets is mandatory. Moderate use of AI coding tools is recommended to allow proper evaluation of each team member's contribution to the project.
The generation of 2D/3D assets is not subject to particular restrictions.
Use of pre-existing content
The percentage of pre-existing content (excluding only 2D/3D assets) over the total project must not exceed 30% of the total.
In order to evaluate this percentage, the first commit to the repository must contain all pre-existing material (excluding 2D/3D assets) that the team intends to use for the project. If the team plans to use software add-ons (open-source, from the Unity Asset Store, or from other sources), they must initially include at least one text file "addons.txt" with the specifications of such plugins/software packages.
It is prohibited to enter personal data or confidential information in public prompts.
The development apps must be an original creation of the Team and may not include material protected by copyright, trademark, patent, or previously published. Apps may not display copyrighted or trademarked logos/marks without a license. Apps must not defame or violate the rights or privacy of any person, living or deceased, nor otherwise violate the personal, proprietary, or intellectual rights of third parties. Apps may not contain illegal or illicit material and must not promote any political agenda or contain offensive, harmful, objectionable, discriminatory, or otherwise inappropriate content for publication, including in relation to race, religion, origin, or gender, or that could negatively reflect on the name, reputation, or goodwill of the organizing company Youbiquo, the Hackathon, UNISA University, and their affiliated sponsors; promote intolerance, racism, violence, or discrimination. Applications that, at the sole discretion of Youbiquo, UNISA, and the judges, violate these conditions in part or in their entirety will be disqualified. Apps that do not meet the stated criteria, or applications that, at the sole discretion of Youbiquo, UNISA, or the judges, may technically meet the stated criteria but do not reflect the intent and spirit of the Competition, are not eligible. Youbiquo and UNISA reserve the right, at their sole discretion, to suspend, remove, or disable access to any registration or account if they believe the registration may violate intellectual property rights, contain unlawful or inappropriate content, or otherwise represent risks to reputation, legality, or security. Such actions may be taken with notice and may result in disqualification from the Competition.
Eligible Teams will receive one (1) registration to the Competition, via an email response to the email provided by participants. Incomplete or illegible registrations will be considered invalid. Multiple registrations are not permitted; each registration must be submitted or obtained in accordance with these Official Competition Rules.
By submitting the development app, the Participant agrees to indemnify and hold harmless Youbiquo and its parent companies, subsidiaries, affiliates, sales representatives, agencies, resellers, wholesalers, distributors, and promotional and other service providers involved in this Competition from any claims, damages, expenses, costs (including reasonable legal fees), and liabilities (including settlement agreements), arising from or relating to the Participant's submission or any information provided or represented to Youbiquo by the Participant.
Unless prohibited, by participating in the Competition and winning a prize, Participants consent to the use of their name, photo and/or image, biographical information, registration, and statements attributed to the Participant (if true) for advertising and promotional purposes, without further compensation.
5.B. Additional admission requirements per category
In addition to the general requirements indicated above, registrations must meet the following requirements for each respective category:
Youbiquo Category
Apps submitted for the category must be based on conveying an experience through self-guided exploration for problem solving, process efficiency, safety, and corporate training.
Development apps must be built with a clearly defined theme and problem resolution. Apps must comply with the required specifications.
Although a publication license is provided, Youbiquo may decide not to publish or to remove an app from the store for technical, legal, security, or reputational reasons, or for failure to meet requirements. Publication is subject to compliance with minimum requirements and, where applicable, to the signing of a subsequent agreement for economic conditions.
- EVALUATION CRITERIA / WINNER SELECTION
Applications will be evaluated by a jury selected by Youbiquo and UNISA, which may include employees and/or influencers of Youbiquo and UNISA. All jury decisions are final and binding on all applications.
- Judgment for the Youbiquo category
The evaluation will take place on the last day of the competition scheduled for 17/04/2026 as indicated in the Schedule. The evaluation will consist of a single round in which each application will be scored on a scale of 70 points as follows:
- A maximum of 10 points for scene design. This category will consider the overall aesthetics, along with features that include spatial composition and layout, combined with animations and visual/audio effects.
- A maximum of 10 points for interactivity and technical competence. This category will examine the effective use of interactive design elements and functions. Including, by way of example but not limited to, all technical elements that enable interaction, such as physics, lighting, audio, etc.
- A maximum of 10 points for creativity. This category will evaluate the originality and innovative thinking that bring the concept to life. Judges will look for a unique concept/atmosphere, with a clear theme or vision and distinctive and memorable experiences.
- A maximum of 10 points for user experience. This category will be evaluated based on ease of navigation, intuitive features, and overall satisfaction. For example, the experience avoids motion sickness, disorientation, or visual confusion, and the environment is engaging while remaining comfortable for users.
- A maximum of 10 points for user engagement. This category will be evaluated based on the ability to capture and maintain user interest. Judges will evaluate the interactivity and emotional impact on users; whether the experience evokes curiosity, enthusiasm, or emotion and whether users feel motivated to spend time exploring and interacting with the app and wish to return to explore it again in the future.
- A maximum of 10 points for adherence to the challenge and value for companies. This category will evaluate how precisely the project responds to the proposed challenge and its ability to generate concrete value for companies. Judges will consider the clarity of the problem addressed, the consistency of the solution with respect to the challenge objectives, and the potential impact in terms of usefulness, applicability, and adoption in real contexts.
- A maximum of 10 points for "store-ready" completeness. This category will consider the level of maturity of the project from a publication/distribution perspective, evaluating whether the experience is complete and ready to be presented as a product. By way of example but not limited to, the following will be considered: stability and absence of blocking bugs, completeness of main flows, quality and consistency of content, presence of minimum packaging elements (name, description, instructions/controls), correct management of permissions and dependencies, as well as compliance with basic privacy and security requirements where applicable.
- Judgment for the NEOLAiA category
The evaluation will take place on the last day of the competition scheduled for 17/04/2026 as indicated in the Schedule. The evaluation will consist of a single round in which each application will be scored on a scale of 40 points as follows:
A maximum of 10 points for impact: This category will be evaluated based on the actual effectiveness of the project in solving concrete and tangible problems for students and teachers within the school or academic context. For example, the solution significantly reduces time spent on bureaucratic tasks, facilitates learning and understanding of concepts, improves communication between the University and students, or offers a practical tool that has a positive and measurable effect on daily life in the educational environment.
A maximum of 10 points for innovation: This category will be evaluated based on the degree of technical or methodological novelty compared to solutions already existing on the market or commonly used. For example, the idea introduces a completely new approach to a long-standing problem, uses emerging technologies in unexpected contexts, or clearly distinguishes itself from classic software already available, demonstrating that it is not a simple replica of something "already seen elsewhere".
A maximum of 10 points for creativity: This category will be evaluated based on the originality of the concept, "out of the box" thinking, and the uniqueness of the approach taken by the team to develop the solution. For example, the project tackles a common challenge from a surprising and fun perspective, intelligently integrates gamification elements or an appealing design, and shows a bold vision that goes beyond mere functionality to create a memorable experience.
A maximum of 10 points for presentation: This category will be evaluated based on clarity of exposition, communicative effectiveness, and the team's ability to convey the value of their work during the pitch. For example, the team explains the problem and the solution concisely and persuasively, uses a clear and impactful demo or slides, answers the jury's questions with confidence, and demonstrates passion and cohesion, maintaining the audience's attention.
The jury will consist of 3 figures: 1 juror internal to the University of Salerno and 2 external (one UX expert and one developer).
Selection of Winners for the Youbiquo category
The top two (2) ranked teams in the Youbiquo category (i.e., first and second place) will be those consisting of participants who have obtained the two (2) highest total scores following the evaluation (hereinafter, the "Potential Category Winners"). In case of a tie, the participant with the highest score for the criterion of "store-ready" completeness will be considered the winner. In the event of a further tie, the participant with the highest score for adherence to the challenge and value for companies will be considered the winner.
Potential category winners will be announced during the event on 17/04/2026 as provided for in the Schedule.
If a potential winner of a prize category does not provide the required information within the required time period or cannot accept the prize, the potential category winner forfeits the prize and Youbiquo and/or UNISA reserve the right to disqualify such potential category winner and award the prize to an alternate team selected in the same manner. The award of the prize is subject to compliance with these Official Rules. In the event that a potential winner is disqualified for any reason, the Sponsor will award the applicable prize to the next participants with the highest score in that particular category.
